Here's the problem: not all habits are good. Along with habits of good driving or
calmness during difficulty, there are habits of overeating or smoking (to name just two).
We may tell ourselves over and over again to put the fork down or to just quit smoking
the day after New Year's Eve. But -- those fears are irrational. Our minds just don't
want to listen. So we remain smokers or over-eaters because our
critical faculty is
standing in the way. It's protecting that part of our subconscious minds that maintains
the "constancy" of our daily lives.

But in order to realize our highest potential we need to move beyond the status quo.
And hypnotherapy can help us do that.


The Key to Success with Hypnotherapy? Conscious desire.

Hypnosis works by bypassing the critical faculty. The key to success in hypnotherapy
is the genuine desire for change.

The hypnosis client must
consciously want to change. We must have the cooperation
of the ruling conscious mind. Positive changes through hypnotherapy result from the
harmonious cooperation between the conscious and subconscious minds, which are
really natural and easy.

Here's
an example: losing weight through hypnotherapy is very different from
conventional dieting. A diet is like a never ending battle between the conscious and
subconscious where calorie counting is a continuous confrontation with the
temptations of food. Weight control through hypnotherapy could not be more unlike
dieting because subconscious cravings are modified and aligned with the positive
choices of the conscious mind. To make a bold metaphor, dieting is akin to war while
weight control through hypnosis is the waging of peace between the conscious and
subconscious minds.

The positive change from negative eating habits to healthful and sensible patterns of
eating in order to lose weight and maintain
weight loss, when done through a
program of hypnotherapy, is a wonderfully natural experience compared with the
experiences of most dieters. Much the same comparison may be made between
conventional
stop smoking programs and hypnotherapy.

What Does "Self hypnosis" Mean?

I know, you don't want to be reminded of classroom stuff. But... for the people who are
new to this subject, let's get the
basics out of the way. OK?

Terms for self-hypnosis include auto-suggestion and auto-hypnosis. Here's a formal

definition:
self-hypnosis is self-induced high levels of mental, physical, and psychological
relaxation that allows the subconscious mind to be more suggestible to the non-critical
acceptance of information, ideas and concepts. But let me break it down
more...

The human conscious mind is based on a library of instinctive responses to habitual
behavior which can only be changed by appealing to the subconscious. And you can
strongly affect that part of the mind when you use good hypnosis scripts which use
effective imagery and sound hypnotic technique. The conscious mind also usually requires
evidence to change your habits.
Self-hypnosis can update that instinctive response. Here
are some examples:

When you say: "I'll
try to lose weight by using self-hypnosis," that undermines what you
need to do because the subconscious requires more positivity.
Instead say this: "Now
eating healthy foods in correct portions is easy and natural for me." That way the new
good habit would replace the former negative instinctive habit.

Another example: To quit smoking you could use self-hypnosis to achieve success. But you
can't just use the word "try." You need to re-frame your approach to achieve success.
Research (and my clinical experience) underscores the value of changing your language
from "I try to quit smoking" to "I want to live a smoke-free healthier life."

Self-hypnosis can help change fear (phobic) responses too. In fact all of these changes,
and more, are made through the REM state or the hypnotic state.

What's the "Critical Factor"?

Each of us has a lifetime of memories and habits that are buried in our memories, often
deep in our subconscious minds. Life would be impossible if we had to constantly relearn
all our habits. Imagine having to relearn the habits of safe driving each time we get into a
car, or even the habits of walking or speaking.

Nature has protected us from unlearning the vast knowledge
retained by the
subconscious
through what has been called the "critical faculty" or "critical editor". Old
habits and behaviors are not easily changed.
